  • Hard Disk Sentinel Pro is a multi-OS hard disk drive monitoring application. Its goal is to find, test, diagnose and repair hard disk drive issues, display hard disk.
  • Sounds like the term you're looking for is a surface scan. I've used DriveDX as a Mac version of HDSentinel to great effect. I'd run that on the Mac and see what it comes up with. You can also throw a spare hard drive in it and reimage it; see if the problem persists. I'm with /u/AlistairMann - single bad sector and it's dead to me.

I've been looking for non-Windows (both OSX and Linux) alternatives for the HDD scanning tools such as Victoria or HDDscan that scan the entire disk and give a sector-by-sector readout of time to access the sector and how many unreadable sectors there are on a drive. However, my google-fu is weakened by the fact that I'm not exactly sure what this kind of scan is called.

Mainly I need one for OSX, as the usual MO here is to basically just guess that when OSX shits the bed, it's because the HDD is bad. Which 1) Isn't really good practice and 2) Means I have to open up more iMacs than I'd like. Like, right now the Disk Utility says the disk is okay, but the iMac is locking up after about five minutes or so. Bossman says that it's the hard drive 'because Macs don't get software issues.' I'd just like some definite proof before I commit to opening this stupid thing.

P.S. I also have no idea how to read SMART data. I've checked disks that are all labeled as 'healthy' by the SMART readout but then when I scan them they have a couple of bad sectors. We also had a tech that used to work here that would go off the SMART to diagnose bad hdds and a good portion of my time went into putting out the fires caused by people getting buttblasted that their computers were still having the exact same problem and there was going to be an additional cost to the wipe/reload charge that they already paid. I very quickly ran out of good ways to answer 'Why didn't you get it right the first time?'

EDIT: Can someone please tell me why this is getting downvoted? This is legitimate tech-to-tech discussion.
